Classes are offered at CREATE year round. Fees will not be expected until a minimum number of students for a class is achieved (generally 6 for a CREATE class, and 10 to 12 for a class given in collaboration with the Montgomery County Department of Recreation). You will be notified via email when the enrollment requirement is met.
Can’t take Drawing & Painting on Mondays? Want to try an art class that’s not on our current class list? You can now “Create It Your Way”! Just gather at least four students of similar age, interest, and availability, and we’ll work with you to design your personalized class. Email us for more details.
Note: Children 18 years and up can register for adult classes.

Family Pottery
|
This class is an artistic exploration for the family and adult participation is required. Dig in with both hands into the methods of clay construction; pinch, coil and slab. Students will create both sculpture and pottery and explore decorative techniques including glaze application, water-on-clay color, and other unusual finishes. Projects are fired in a kiln on our premises and students will take home several finished pieces. Parents and children may work on projects together or independently. Younger students will need help and supervision from the parent, while the teacher helps the parent to help the child. No wheel instruction.

Drawing & Painting I

Young artists are introduced to the basic techniques of drawing & painting by using color to express emotion, exploring lines & shapes and creating realistic drawing such as self-portraits & still life. Students will use a variety of mediums including; chalk & oil pastels, tempera paint, colored pencils, watercolor and more.

Stone Carving

In this class students will use several colors of alabaster to carve small and medium sized sculptures as well as amulets, beads, and pendants. We will initially use rasps and files to shape the stone and a variety of sandpaper grits, from very coarse to very fine, to polish the finished work. Beads and amulets can be hung from a variety of attractive cords; sculptures can be mounted on a wood or stone base. All of these make beautiful keepsakes for the student as well as welcome holiday gifts for friends. Carving can be strenuous, but is well worth the effort.

Drawing & Painting II

The focus of this class will be to assist students in creating realistic and imaginative drawings. Students will develop the art of “seeing.” Each week students will draw from different still-life compositions using pencil, charcoal, watercolor, and ink. The instructor will assist the student with sharpening their powers of perception and increasing their drawing skills. Using watercolor, tempera and acrylic paints, students will explore the world of painting. Students will learn about color mixing, color intensity, brush work, and how to combine all of these elements into a realistic painting.

Exploration in Watercolor

This class teaches the beginner level fundamentals of watercolor painting. Students will complete several masterpieces while exploring easy-to-learn tricks & techniques, such as proper brush handling, masking, painting a seamless flat wash, lifting paint, using objects for texture, spattering & spraying.

Paint Pals

Ready…set…paint! This class allows young artists to build motor skills while having fun with color! Students will discover how to maneuver more than just a paintbrush across their paper, as they learn how to create patterns, texture and shape with 3D objects using watercolor and tempera paints. Adult participation is required.

Beyond Creativity

This exciting class structured just for girls encourages exploration of art fundamentals by learning various drawing and painting techniques. Line, shape, color, shading and proportions are all explored. The supportive “girls only” class creates a safe and fun environment where students learn from each other as they challenge themselves in new artistic areas.

Cartooning &

In this eight week class your child will learn the basic tools for creating their very own cartoon characters and comic book. Students will start with learning basic line and shape, moving on to character development, then creating story boards and completing the class by inking their final draft. No previous illustrating experience is needed just the desire to tell their own story by drawing the pictures.
