Arts on Foot – September 10, 2011
CREATE Arts Center was given an opportunity to partner with Smith Farm Center for Healing and the Arts on the launch of the 9/11 Arts Project. We shared a tent at the Arts on Foot festival in Penn Quarter to help spread the word about the Project and the benefits of Art Therapy. We helped attendees create Dream Scrolls out of wallpaper and burlap that gave them the opportunity to share their vision for a post – 9/11 world.
A huge thank you to Smith Farm for inviting us to be apart of this event. Also, we could not have done it without all of our wonderful CREATE staff and teachers, as well as our new friends from George Washington University’s Art Therapy program!
Fenton Street Market – May 28, 2011
On Saturday May 28th CREATE Arts Center participated in the Fenton Street Arts Market in Downtown Silver Spring. Located in Veteran’s Plaza in front of the new civic center, the Arts Market is held in conjunction with the weekly Farmer’s Market on Ellsworth Drive.
Using animal stickers, markers and sequins, the children (and adults) decorated colorful crowns with the help of our teachers and volunteers: Joan, Patrick, Elis, Shirley, Jamillah, Aliana and Heather.
Thank you to everyone who visited our table!

Volunteer Coordinator, Jamillah Abdullah, and Program Manager, Jessica Lewis, recently attended the Advisory Council on Family Care (ACFC) Fair held at Verizon headquarters in Silver Spring. The goal of ACFC is to help employees meet their family and work/life needs and CREATE was invited as an organization that would be of interest to them. There were about 800 employees that passed through the fair and received information on CREATE’s programs.

Liberty’s Promise – April 6, 2011
Recently, our Volunteer Coordinator, Jamillah Abdullah, visited John F. Kennedy HS to speak to a group of teens as part of Liberty’s Promise community outreach program.
“Liberty’s Promise supports young immigrants in need while encouraging them to be active and conscientious American citizens. Our programs aim to make the immigrant experience an affirmative one for young newcomers while instilling in them a sense of pride and support for American ideals of democracy and freedom.” (Libertyspromise.org)
Many of the students were preparing to graduate and already had college degrees in mind. Jamillah shared with them how art could still be a part of their lives, no matter which career path they chose.
