3rd Annual Spring Fling

On May 14th CREATE held its 3rd Annual Spring Fling. The event included music by local bands; Ladle Fight, Wiley Sonic and The Dukes. Food and drinks were donated by a variety of area restaurants. There was art made by CREATE’s students, clients and teachers both on display and for sale. The event was a huge success raising money for smARTkids and Studio Downstairs, two of CREATE’s flagship programs serving at-risk populations.

Spring Break Camp 2011

This year CREATE held two separate Spring Break Camps in March and April to accommodate the many public, private and charter schools in the region. Campers engaged in a variety of art projects including 3D sculpture, Styrofoam screen printing, pottery, and cartooning.

Summer Camp Mini Session 1

CREATE’s Summer Camp is under way. During our first Mini Session campers made monochromatic paintings, pottery, Styrofoam prints, 3D Matisse, jungle collages, and animal sculptures. To top off a great week, a few campers put on their very own puppet show!

Summer Camp Session 1

This week campers created hybrid animal sculptures and then painted pictures to match. They tested their acting skills by creating puppets and writing a short play, which they performed for each other and our staff. They also had the opportunity to make and glaze pottery, which was fired onsite. One of the most popular projects for the session was elongated self-portraits in the style of Modigliani created using black construction paper and oil pastels.

Summer Camp Session 2

During Session 2 of camp, students had the opportunity to create their own cartoons. They developed short story lines to accompany their sketches. In addition, they used oil pastels to draw scenes from outer space, including planets, stars and rocket ships.  They even made their own looms and created weaving’s out of yarn!

Summer Camp Session 3

Our 3rd session of camp gave kids the chance to work on their storytelling skills. They also learned about mixing colors and of course there was time for recycled art sculptures and pottery. They even got to see Mr. Patrick draw caricatures of the volunteers!

Summer Camp Session 5

Mosaics and pottery and collages oh my! In this installment of summer camp, campers had the chance to learn about artists Klee and Mondrian by working with oil pastels and water colors. They also wrote and illustrated their own cartoons and used the concept of balance to create mobiles.

Summer Camp Mini Session 2

In our final week of camp, we made mixed media collages out of magazines and tempura paint. Campers also used recycled materials to create 3 dimensional names and construction paper to design 2 dimensional playgrounds.
